Republican David Flippo will face Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson for Nevada’s Congressional District 2 seat in November.

They’re vying for Rep. Mark Amodei’s longtime seat after he announced his retirement after 15 years, earlier this year.

At one point, nearly 30 people filed to run for the soon-to-be vacant seat, which covers much of northern Nevada.

But in the end, Flippo and Benitez-Thompson won Tuesday’s primary election to advance to November’s general election.

Congressional District Seat 2, or CD2, was created after the 1982 election – and since then only four people have held the seat, all of whom were Republicans.

Late last month, President Trump endorsed Flippo, while Amodei and Governor Joe Lombardo both endorsed James Settelmeyer in the race, who spent 16 years in the Nevada Legislature.

After the primary results, outgoing Congressman Mark Amodei, who backed Settelmeyer in the race, reflected on the outcome in a post on social media. Amodei said he believes Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District is no longer a guaranteed Republican seat and praised Settelmeyer’s campaign while expressing respect for voters’ decision.

"I served for 12 years in the Nevada State Legislature, and I'm very proud of my voting record there," Benitez-Thompson said. "I got to do good things for Nevada and, like, raise the minimum wage. Expand access to health care, bring down cost of prescriptions."
